Epic Flores & Komodo National Park Adventure

We just got back from our spring break trip in Flores. As everyone knows, spring break always goes by too fast, but Matt & I made the most of the time we had off. I'm beginning to think that schools have breaks solely for the teachers, bc if teachers had to instruct 365 days a year, they would probably end up in an insane asylum. So needless to say, this nice week long break was TOTALLY necessary to the evolution of both Matt & my sanity.
We jumped on a plane almost as soon as the gong struck Spring Break & headed for Flores, which is 3 islands east of Bali. We arrived in Labuan Bajo and stayed there for two nights. It was an interesting place, not exactly a vacation get-away but it was where we had to find our diving packages. So, we booked a dive trip, & headed out to the remote islands as soon as possible. We hopped in an old shaggy boat & drove an hour towards the horizon where we found a very desolate island called Surya. There was absolutely nothing on the island except bright green grass & a long white sand beach aligned with little bungalows. Totally away from everything. All the passengers looked at each other with a shit eating grin all thinking "Yes! This is exactly what I need." So we were in the middle of nowhere, with nothing to do, & no expectations or to do lists. It was beautiful. It was a bit rainy while we were there, so it forced us to read, write, & play cards. Really, I don't think I could have asked for anything better at that moment. It was amazing how long it took me to actually relax after being in the groove of work for so long. After one day of being on Surya my engine had cooled, and finally I felt carefree & relaxed.
One evening just before sunset, Matt & I pealed ourselves away from our serious R & R session we had become dedicated to, and headed to the top of the island about 100m above sea level to catch the sunset. The colors of the island & the surrounding ocean water was extremely vivid from this point of view. The grass was screaming bright yellow & green, & the ocean was flaunting the brightest blue I have ever witnessed. In the distance the neighboring islands were beautifully placed, a painter couldn't have aligned them better. And the sunset was definitely one to remember. We couldn't help but to meditate, do yoga, & feel extreme gratitude to be alive on the top of the island that sweet evening.
Two days later as we sat in the restaurant eating breakfast a huge pirate ship pulled up to the island to pick Matt & I up along with another couple from Holland. All of us were overflowing with excitement to get on board. We were bound for two days & one night on this live aboard which included SEVEN different dive spots & trekking on Rinca Island where the famous Komodo dragons live. I was sincerely looking forward to diving in this region of the world-I had only heard great things. The first day was absolutely amazing we did three dives all in different sections of Komodo Island National Park. One of the dives had a moderate current, it was my first experience with a current, we just floated by everything, I was in awe of the incredible life & colors I was zooming past. There were certain points where I just wanted to stop & take a closer look, but there was no chance of manipulating this current. I saw a huge cuttle fish (squid-like), a moray eel, and two turtles dancing together, all new visions for me underwater. When night time rolled around our dive master informed us we would also be doing a night dive... Which I have to be honest about, I was pretty nervous. I'm a sucker when it comes to darkness, I can't see well & my eyes play tricks on me, literally I see things. And when your in the ocean, you really never know what could be creeping, if you know what I mean. I've been told that humans learn the most when they enter the "Zone of the Unknown," so although it was a bit freaky at times it was mind expanding. Plus, anytime I got scared I just swam quickly by Matt's side, literally, like a little girl running for security scared of the darkness.
Even after these great experiences, the best was still yet to come. Our second day was action packed with some of the BEST dive spots in Komodo Island National Park. We woke up at 6:30am and pulled on our scuba gear with one eye open, and dropped in the water at a spot called Batu Bolong. It was an atoll which is an island made up entirely of coral. As soon as I sank 10 meters into this water both of my eyes were wide open, and if my mouth wasn't holding my air my jaw would have been dropped. This spot literally was a scene from Finding Nemo, the colors & the biodiversity of fish & Corals was insanely beautiful. Talk about an ecosystem, this place was thriving in every sense of the word. There was so much going on, it was hard to focus on one particular spot, but when you did a whole 'nother world was exposed. It's hard to explain in words the extraordinary features of this place, but when we surfaced my boat mate described the experience quite eloquently when she yelled "MY MIND HAS BEEN BLOWN & I HAVEN"T EVEN HAD BREAKFAST YET!"
The next spot we went diving at offered me a gift I had never been offered before. The spot was called Manta Point, so I bet you can guess who I was acquainted with here.. We dropped in the water & it was plain white sand, hardly any coral, and after the first 10-15 min went by we all started wondering if we were actually going to get to see any Manta Rays. Then out of nowhere came this GIGANTIC black cloud coming straight for us, as it got closer I could see it huge mouth, I got super nervous "this thing is totally gonna eat me" I thought. Then, I remembered Mantas are one of the most gentle creatures who roam the waters. Their sheer size is just intimidating at first. I'm talking a 4-6 meter wingspan, these creatures were HUGE, but they swam so impassioned, like an eagle soaring slowly through the sky. We saw 11 mantas total on this 62 minute dive, and two mantas, one black & one white, even gave us a dance as they romantically swarmed each other.
After our 7 dives were over, we were exhausted! Diving really takes it out of you. So we sailed towards Rinca with full intention to witness the Komodo dragons. These creatures were incredible, they are the largest lizard in the world, and only live in this one very special crevices of the Earth (Rinca & Komodo Islands). These dragons are serious carnivores, they take down cattle & each other for dinner. Their face reminded me of Raptor, these things have had to be around for a LONG time, they resembled dinosaurs, not your typical lizard. From the tip of their nose to the end of their tail these monsters average about 3 meters in length. Did I mention that they carry bacteria in their mouths that can kill humans, so pretty much, they dominate where ever they live, therefore they are highly respected on these two islands.
After this, our live-a-board adventure quickly came to an end & we grounded again back in Labuan Bajo with one day left to relax & restore.

Now, its back to reality...
But, Matt said it best we pointed out: "where do you go for vacation when you live in Bali??"
Ahhhh home sweet home.

Hidden Gems

For some reason, the most recent 2 places I have lived in have been "tourist traps" (interesting in of itself). The biggest tourist trap here in Bali is Kuta which I NEVER go to by choice (there are many reasons, but the biggest is it is a display of a beautiful culture being slaughtered)..
It is definitely weird calling home a place were people run to for vacation.

There are many really special things about being a local & one is getting in touch with the secrets of the people & the land. Somehow, we keep coming across hidden gems in Bali that no tourist would have the chance finding. Little white hidden beaches tucked away in coves, and yesterday we just so happen to find an INCREDIBLE waterfall wrapped in Rainbows.
This place truly is paradise!!

The Love Tribe

The dark path was lit with small candles,
and aligned with little white & yellow iconic flowers of Bali.

I was late.
When I walked in the tribe was sitting with gazed eyes watching the Indian women dancing with bells & chimes attached to their ankles & wrists.

After an hour of these women performing indigenous Indian dances,
the mood was set.

The space was filled with individuals who are grateful for the offerings of the Earth, the universe, & the people.
All possessing a common goal, all on the same search, for truth, insight, & love.

Raw Chocolate Goddesses walked around with platters of pure Anandamide, the bliss molecule, in an assortment of flavors & sensations.
Soon we all carried a similar frequency.

Our friend David stood up in front of everyone to begin the trance of listening, feeling, healing, & speaking from the heart.

The woman with the singing bowls took over & guided us all into a deep meditation, we went deep inside & found one glowing cell within us that stood out from the rest.
The healing began.

Totally calm,
the goddesses rubbed Cacao butter on our 3rd eye, then we all began to sing. The house vibrated with a rhythmic sensation that sent shivers down my spine.

The counsel included love spreaders of all kinds speaking about how to rightfully tap into the land, our souls, & the universe. All with the vision to spread love, awareness, & consciousness.
Collectively we shared & embraced the company of each others gifts they all had to offer.
Connecting to each other & reaching out to the whole.

A community centered, & aligned.

Filled with bliss.

This love tribe still thrives on planet Earth.
It is easier to find in some places than others, but it is everywhere.

Find it.

Alex Grey Incident

It all started Friday morning when Matt woke me up saying “I have a surprise for you,” and just like anyone else would I got all giddy & asked “What?! What?! What?!” with an eager grin to hear what he had in store. He asked me “who’s your favorite artist??” and my reaction was “nu-uh” because I already knew who I was going to meet…
Sometimes manifestation is all about crossing paths with the right people. Matt crossed paths with a traveling friend (David) who he previously met in Egypt. Their connection was totally coincidental, David wrote Matt an email checking up on him out of the blue and expressed how he was in this magical place called Bali, Matt wrote back & agreed how magical this place was because they could finally meet up again. Like many other people who we are starting to become acquainted with in Bali, David is a highly spiritual pure being. We have had a few random encounters with him, but tonight was by far the best. David invited us to join him over to this friend’s place who also invited Alex Grey (my favorite artist) to come speak to a group of people who are all on a similar path.
Before we went to the party David had us over for dinner & we had a very simple, but magical meal which ended with his delicious home-made raw chocolate. The meal was an experiment for Matt, because all though he has been testing out the vegetarian world, he has not yet been a fan of either eggplant or tempe, and that is what this meal consisted of. David sautéed the tempe & eggplant and coated it with a fresh mixture of cilantro and herbs, and placed it on top of a refreshing bed of bean sprouts. A rabbit snack some would call it, but we felt great after eating it. After we were all finished sipping our fresh coconut water & eating our meal, David walked to the fridge & pulled out his second experiment of the night-raw chocolate (the kitchen is the best place to experiment by the way). You can find the Cacao plant here (in our backyard) & inside the fruit lies these seeds of raw untouched, unprocessed cacao, just waiting to be made into something delicious. Among the many health benefits Cacao possess, David is most intrigued by the chemicals (anadamide) that essentially promote happiness, a good mood, and feelings of LOVE. For a lack of better words, it gets you high. He made 3 chocolate balls for each of us, Matt & I were eager to finally test this “raw chocolate” theory out, especially since we have been consciously sober for the majority of the time here in Bali. We figured if it works, you have to be 100% sober to really feel the experience. We Soared! For almost 2 hours we were full of energy, pulsating joy & a shit eating grin. Mind you, there is absolutely no sugar in this stuff, just totally pure (if you are interested in the ingredients, let me know, I will share). We followed David to the party with our motorbike; he kept looking back at us with his huge smile as he could hear us singing.
Finally, we arrive to David’s friend’s house & this place was tucked away in the rice fields & it was a castle. Evidently, the owner of the house is currently making a movie about Bali, and clearly was already wealthy. The house was filled with cultural art & sacred geometry, it didn’t take me too long to figure out I was surrounded by good people & warm vibes. At this point I had butterflies in my stomach, I did my best to keep my composure & focus on the conversations I was having, but soon Alex would be here. WOW! Soon enough the space was filling up, maybe 50 people waiting to be acquainted with Alex’s visions & ideas. By the time he arrived we were all sitting on pillows listening to a mantra band play and when they were done, Alex & Alice gracefully took the “stage”. Now, being from America I have a one-up knowing this artist I guess, because there were a few people who only knew “some” respected artist was coming to speak. Personally, I couldn’t believe I manifested this night into my life, and I was shocked how much this night absolutely aligned with the inspiration I needed at this time. Matt & I have been very grounded with our work here at Greenschool & extremely focused in a very microscopic way, but if you have ever seen Alex Grey speak you know he is also a very “out-there” individual whose ideas are expansive, yet loose, in a very telescopic way. Alice his wife on the other hand was very grounded & kept bringing Alex back down to Earth & reminding him what the question was or what train of thought we were supposed to be focusing on. It was beautiful to watch them go back & forth, their duality was very complimentary actually, and it reminded me how important it is to embrace the groundedness as well as the out-thereness.
During their talk there were many things that resonated with me, some that are stored away in my consciousness & some in my sub-conscious, but Alex reminded me of the beauty of life & that we truly are the artist of our lives-our lives are a canvas. Alex & Alice started with a short introduction, then opened the space for questions & blessings (typically something that happens at the end, but these individuals weren’t normal by any means). The first person set the space for a blessing & brought us all together, he tightened the weave between all of us in the room. Then I asked the first question. In their introduction they mentioned that they had been traveling a lot and spreading their work, so the question my brother previously prompted me with was appropriate although I had a second question on the tip of my tongue. I locked eyes with Alex & asked “what country has been the most inspirational to the both of you, and your work so far?” Alice answered the question by exclaiming that “boundaries are nice, but in all reality they don’t matter, because our “love tribe” is everywhere we go. No matter what country we are in our work is supported and we are all one, it doesn’t matter if we are in Italy or Indonesia.” Then Alex chimed in & looked at me & said “each country has its own flavor & each of those flavors have inspired our minds & our work in their own ways, but we embrace all of them as differences, none of them better than any other. Like Bali for instance, this place is a vortex of healing, and that is just one of the flavors.” This for me, was the perfect answer, it was exactly what I needed to hear.
They spoke of several aspects of life, art & being, I felt privileged to be a part of this vivacious community gathering. Most things I am still contemplating over, but there are some things I will share with you. Another girl asked the question “do you have any advice for young artists?” (Bali is full of young artists), and Alex soared around in space with this question for about ten minutes, then when Alice brought him back to Earth he said “Be yourself. Do your best. And Never give up,” he was uttering the success of these words from his experiences, it was obvious. He also spoke about the time of his life when he dedicated his work to the dualities in the world in its many forms. He shaved his head to symbolize the duality of one owns brain, went to the North Pole to witness the dualities of the magnetic poles, etc. He feels that his art is a symbol of duality to this day. He shared the story of his first experience with LSD, and explained how everything was different colors of the spectrum, and all dualities that existed within his vision were opposite colors, and the area between the two of them was indeed grey. The grey connected all opposite together and made everything opposite inevitably ONE. After this experience, he changed his last name & knew the true direction of his art. When he was finally asked how much of his art was influenced by psychedelics he replied “Who me? My art?? Completely!”
He also spoke a lot about universal consciousness, solar consciousness, & earth consciousness, which really made me feel very wholesome & in tune with the work I am doing right now (spreading Earth consciousness to children). He spoke about their project the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, and the meaning behind this amazing project being a reflection of one’s own-self (much like his artwork), and Alice & him also spoke about a question they were asked “how the heck do you guys make your relationship work so well” (I caught this reply on video, if you’re interested I can also send you this). They also mentioned to anyone who celebrates the full moon so send a prayer over to them in NY to nudge along their project along, & they also added that they always send out prayers to anyone else celebrating the full moon (another reflection/duality). After they were finished a world jam band started jamming away & Alex & Alice were swarmed, Matt managed to give Alex a high five & ask him a quick question, but I knew I already had my moment with him.
The funny thing is, last week I saw a blue heron in the rice fields (not something I have ever seen in Bali before), and the next day I was teaching my students about animism (animal medicine) & they asked me to draw a medicine card from the deck, so I did with full intention. I drew the Blue heron which is the medicine of self-reflection.
Coincidentally enough, Matt took this picture of two cats lying on our couch as I wrote this, representing the yin-yang, a symbol of duality in its purest form.

Reminiscing a Shift

For those who believe in or understand reincarnation this idea will make sense & even transform thought for you, and for those who don’t, this many seem like a stretch…
Like many others, I ponder the questions of quantum physics, & wonder why we are here, what’s out there, & what is the point of all this??

One of the many benefits of living in Vail, CO was a colleague whom I had the privilege of experiencing on a daily basis. He is one of the most gentle, compassionate, trustworthy humans I have ever encountered who has truly mastered the art of being (he is a human being). He affected my life in countless ways (this is typical for the people who come across his path), but there was one snowy afternoon when he brought tears to my eyes which I will never forget.
It was natural for me to look to this man for lessons, inspiration, & understanding but it happened during subtle instances like watching his interactions with others & analyzing the beauty he spread into them, or trying to decode his humble words of wisdom he would toss to me in a simple conversation. But, this specific moment was different; we were both engaged in something deep, something he had already come to terms with and something that would change me for the rest of this lifetime.
It all started with the agreement that the difference between an old soul & a young soul was the attainment of lessons & the amount of time spent learning them. We discussed our beliefs about reincarnation, for me it was good to talk about because I didn’t get to speak (let alone be in agreement) of such things in Vail very often. So, my question to him was “what is the point?” Understandably an old soul is more wise because they have been through more, but what is the purpose of repeating the cycle of birth & death, and being forced to start all over again…..?
At this point I could see in his eyes that he was going to test my grounds to see what I was capable of understanding… He explained to me that every human is on a different level (of consciousness) & their placement depends on what lessons the spirit has truly achieved. I knew what he was talking about, & because of his composure & confidence it was obvious that his spirit has been through much adversity.
I found the courage within myself to ask “what does reincarnation have to do with enlightenment then?” The answer was obvious, but I just needed to hear it.
He told me that the point of our existence in our physical bodies (and situations) is to embrace the inevitably of change, and endure each circumstance because it is there, where the lessons unfold. Then he summed it all up by articulating the words I needed to hear; he said the more you overcome in this lifetime, the less hardships you will have to go through in the next. Meaning, the faster you learn & recognize the trials of human suffering such as jealousy, attachment, fear, craving, judgment, hatred, etc. the closer you come to enlightenment. When you truly attain a lesson the chains of resistance are freed from your spirit & you are one step closer to opening yourself up to the world. A spirit will face the patterns of the hardships & lessons until they are mastered.

My spine shivered, & goose bumps covered my skin because I knew what he was speaking was Truth.

Something else he told me that will always stick with me, was to ALWAYS leave situations better than they were when you arrived, but that is a whole nother’ story in itself. I was so blessed to cross paths with this individual.

I wandered through the rounds of countless birth,
Seeking but not finding the builder of this house.
Sorrowful indeed is birth again and again.
Oh, housebuilder! You have now been seen.
You shall build the house no longer.
All your rafters have been broken,
Your ridgepoles shattered.
My mind has attained to unconditional freedom.
Achieved is the end of craving.

Perfect Chaos

“Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.” – Mark Jenkins

In the midst of all this beautiful culture & land there is destruction all over. Destruction of the environment by horrible pollution & manipulations of the Earth, & destruction of the mind & body from genetically modified garbage that is now considered "food" & the intense brainwashing of media defining what the human experience "should" be.
These visions instill a fear within me & make me loose hope for the future of humans. I just want to find a place that is untouched, a place where no plastic bags run through the river, a place where I can breathe deep & be confident that its all fresh air, and a place where the people are conscious of their actions on a much higher level. I'm starting to wonder where this place might exist...
Recently, I have discovered a major flaw in my view of the world.. I have acknowledged that since about the age of 14 I have despised many humans for their inaction (or lack of conscious awareness). On several occasions I have felt myself resenting people for their inability to change their ways to become a more conscious person about what is really going on in the world. I would consistently question others sanity and become filled with anger and disappointment to see humans make such selfish, mindless, & uneducated choices...
What I have realized is that the majority doesn't actually know what goes on behind the walls of a slaughter houses-so they continue to support the meat industry. The majority doesn't know how to recycle, so they throw their trash in the rivers, lakes, & forests. The majority doesn't know (about or) how to take action towards the global fresh water struggle-so they continue to leave the water running as they brush their teeth & take showers for 30 minutes. The majority doesn't understand how many resources the Earth is giving compared to receiving-so people keep consuming! consuming! consuming! This will remain a continuous cycle until human beings become more educated about their daily choices or until its too late..
Depak Chopra said that "people really are doing the best they can, given their level of awareness," this has changed my whole perspective about the evolution of humans. I has also changed my mind about the way I feel about those who don't contribute towards right action. How can I remain angry at a person who truly doesn't know any better??
I wasted all that time & energy being mad at people when I could have used it to lift levels of awareness..

Mission 1-Abort!
Mission 2-Execute!
